- The hypoiodous acid exists with a

- a small amount of an acidic solution is added,
- more hydronium ions are created. Since
- hypoiodous acid is a weak acid, its conjugate
- base is strong. The conjugate base reacts with
- these new hydronium ions until the equilibrium
- is reestablished.
- Another way of considering the action
- of the buffer is that it follows Le Chatelier's
- principle. If the concentration of the hydronium
- ions increases, the reaction moves to decrease
- the concentration of the hydronium ions (and
- maintain the status quo). In order to decrease the
- concentration of the hydronium ions, the conjugate
- base must react with them. When a small amount of
- a basic solution is added, the concentration of hydroxide
